In the heart of Baena, the former mill of Don José Alcalá Santaella has been transformed into the Museum of Olive Groves and Oil, a tribute to the region’s rich olive-growing heritage. With machinery dating back to the 19th century and a team of millers who once worked tirelessly during the harvest season, this place embodies tradition and passion for olive oil.
Covering over 800 m² across two floors, the museum offers an immersive journey into the history and culture of olive oil. On the ground floor, visitors are welcomed by the impressive restored machinery, including a complete mill with two large conical stones, a thermomixer, a hydraulic press with its wagon from La Cordobesa Foundry, and a four-piston hydraulic pump. This floor also features a cellar room and an exhibition on the history and evolution of olive growing in Baena.
Upstairs, different exhibition spaces explore both traditional and modern uses of olive oil, from its role as an energy source to its dietary benefits. A library and an “oleo-workshop” enhance the educational experience, while a collection of over three thousand olive oil labels and a tasting session conclude the visit with the rich aromas of Baena’s Designation of Origin oils.
The Museum of Olive Groves and Oil not only preserves history but also promotes the culture of olive oil and its production. As an educational space, it invites visitors to enjoy a multisensory experience that deepens their knowledge and encourages healthy habits. In Baena, this connection between tradition and innovation offers a unique experience to be enjoyed firsthand.
