The historical essence and
design of the San Francisco
Church in Baena

A detailed journey through the fascinating history, impressive architecture, and important Franciscan legacy of the Conventual Church of San Francisco in Baena

In 1550, the first friars of the Order of San Francisco arrived in Baena under the patronage of Doña María de Mendoza y Sarmiento, wife of the first Duke of Baena. Thanks to her support, the church, cloister, and convent were built, although the current structures date from the 17th century.

The church, with a single nave and transept, is covered by a barrel vault with ribs and lunettes. The walls are decorated with paintings featuring elaborate rocaille ornamentation, giving the entire space an impressive look.

The main door of the temple, in a simple style, was built in the 18th century. It is flanked by two Tuscan pilasters and has a lintel. The other entrance, located on a side street, is even more austere, dating from the 17th century, with a complete pediment and pyramid-shaped pinnacles.

The main altarpiece, carved in wood and polychromed, dates from 1740. In this church, the image of the city’s patron saint is venerated.
